Construction Worker Dies After Falling Down Elevator Shaft in Manhattan

Photo: ABC7

A 30-year-old construction worker fell four stories to his death on Tuesday afternoon, after walking on wooden beams over a elevator shaft without a harness. He was found unconscious on his back in five feet of water at the bottom of the shaft, and was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he later died. Workers at the construction site in Hell’s Kitchen — at 577 Ninth Avenue, between West 41st and 42nd Street — were crying this afternoon, according to DNAinfo. BRF Construction Corp. — in charge of the project — was fined earlier this year after a worker was spotted without a harness, per DNAinfo. Gothamist adds that there were reports last year that a hotel was being built at that address.
