When Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis was released from jail last week, she was told to not interfere as her deputy clerks gave out marriage licenses in Rowan County — or else she would be met with “appropriate sanctions.” Davis had been jailed for five days for failing to obey a court order to begin issuing marriage licenses, something she had stopped doing after the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage in June. On Friday, an attorney representing deputy clerk Brian Mason, who has been issuing the marriage licenses, said Davis had altered the documents, erasing her name from them completely, according to WPFL.
Mason’s attorney, Richard Hughes, said his client was worried that he might be issuing invalid marriage licenses — and that the changes might qualify as interference. According to Hughes’s status report:
