Update: October 7 ended, and the world was not consumed by flames, as far as Daily Intelligencer has been able to tell.
Chris McCann, founder of the eBible Fellowship near Philadelphia, doesn’t want you to worry about work today or whatever is stressing you out this week. Not because he wants you to embrace every second or see the beauty in every moment, but because he’s pretty sure that you will be devoured by unquenchable flames by the end of the day.
Not just you, though — don’t worry! He’s consulted the Bible, and he’s almost positive that Earth is destined to be subsumed in fire and rendered inert on October 7, 2015, which happens to be today.
McCann’s prediction is based on last month’s blood moon, which looked a little ominous and burnt. “God destroyed the first Earth with water, by a flood, in the days of Noah,” McCann said. “And he says he’ll not do that again, not by water. But he does say in 2nd Peter 3 that he’ll destroy it by fire.” He’s not the only person to predict blood-moon-influenced calamities; a minister in Texas said in 2013 that “The coming four blood moons points to a world-shaking event that will happen between April 2014 and October 2015.”
However, the leader of the religious online affiliation says there is a minuscule chance he could be wrong. “There’s a strong likelihood that this will happen. Which means there’s an unlikely possibility that it will not.”
The world was last predicted to end in October 2011, a doomsday weather forecast by Christian radio host Harold Camping that appears to have been incorrect. Before that, Camping said it seemed likely that the Apocalypse would happen on May 21, 2011 — a prediction that did not come true and forced the late Camping to revise Earth’s expiration date to later that year.
The world was also scheduled to end in December 2012 — and many other times in human history.
If you happen to wake up tomorrow, the world enters a bit of a dry spell as far as doomsday predictions go. The next date for the end of the world does not occur until 2021.
Many scientists agree with McCann — it is possible that Earth could be destroyed by intense, humanity-swallowing heat. However, they are also pretty sure that this won’t happen today but when the sun grows so large and hot that it engulfs Earth and turns it into a planet-size toasted marshmallow, an event that could happen less than 8 billion years from now — or, for those counting in doomsday-prediction years, roughly 5,000,027 incorrect forecasts of the end of humanity from today.
