Ironically, while Donald Trump can’t stop talking about “Lying Ted,” nearly every one of his interactions with the media is filled with half-truths and contradictions. Anderson Cooper, undaunted by his failure to get the candidate to acknowledge the terrible truth about Trump-brand steaks, made a noble effort to reason with him during CNN’s town hall on Tuesday night.
When confronted about his nasty innuendo about Ted Cruz’s wife last week, Trump said of his retweet, “I thought it was a nice picture of Heidi. I thought it was fine.” “Come on,” AC responded, stopping just short of rolling his eyes. Trump tried a different explanation. “Excuse me, I didn’t start it. I didn’t start it,” he said of the wife spat. “Sir, with all due respect, that’s the argument of a 5-year-old,” Cooper answered.
Trump insisted that, despite evidence to the contrary, Cruz was behind the original sexist Facebook ad targeting Melania, and later he fought Cooper about the fact that he has two donation buttons on his website (finally, he acknowledged, “Okay, whatever. Whatever. It’s peanuts”).
When asked about his un-presidential behavior, Trump claimed he mainly gets in trouble when he retweets or repeats things his supporters say. “What is it with you — like, repeats and retweets don’t count?” Cooper wondered, before offering some unsolicited advice: “Maybe that’s one of those things you should learn from your behavior and not retweet things.”
Sorry, Dad. That’s a good point, but Trump probably wasn’t listening.
