A new HuffPo/YouGov poll finds a majority of debate watchers thought that Trump’s apology for his “grab ’em by the pussy” comments wasn’t good enough, and that Trump’s attacks on Hillary Clinton for her husband’s affairs — and his threat to throw her in jail — were both inappropriate.
Summarizing these results, the Huffington Post wrote, Americans Give Thumbs Down to Donald Trump’s Debate Attacks. But on closer inspection, the survey’s findings aren’t as sunny as they appear at first glance.
While an overwhelming number of Democratic respondents disapproved of the Republican nominee threatening to imprison his chief political enemy, a plurality of independents (and majority of Republicans) thought otherwise.
Similarly, a rather large share of independents and Republicans thought attacking Clinton for her husband’s affairs was fair game.
And a majority of men thought Trump’s apology was either sufficient or unnecessary.
Maybe we are even more divided than we know.
