So far, the annual video-game expo E3 has been a litany of long-expected hardware announcements and trailers for game sequels. It wouldn’t be too difficult to take the prize of Most Confounding Announcement — but even with a limited field of competitors, Ubisoft has taken the prize with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. The tactical action-adventure has Nintendo’s famous Italian plumber and his friends fighting alongside Ubisoft’s sociopathically cuddly animals. The gameplay is taking pretty clear cues from turn-based strategy games like X-COM. Mario shoots a gun.
There is something deeply uncomfortable about this. This is like the video-game equivalent of the word moist. Fine in theory, discomfiting in practice. I’ll still play it though.
