Paul Rudd vs. the Pickup Artists: It Is On!Writers’ strike aside, there’s still original content being filmed in New York City. My Damn Channel has been running Webisodes of a show starring David Wain, formerly of The State which are pretty hilarious. In the new Webisode, “The Pickup” airing today, Wain’s too-nervous-to-approach-women character consults Alias, a Mystery-like character for help. Played by Paul Rudd, resplendent in a smoking jacket and tight pants, his long straggly wig restrained by a top hat and velvet headband, Alias promises great success picking up women with lines like, “Great hair. Looks silky as shit. What is it, horse hair? You dumb, cheap hooker,” and using made-up words to explain his philosophy. “Beautiful women are told they’re beautiful all day long,” he says smoothly. “What we do, is we deny them our approval hones, that way they’re dependent on us.” It’s pretty much the funniest and smartest takedown of Neil Strauss’s The Game yet.

Brooke Astor’s Dogs Were in Danger! Not only did Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, allegedly steal $132 million from his mom’s estate, but he also wanted to kill her dogs. The latest issue of Vanity Fair chronicles Governor Spitzer’s “troubling, tantrum-filled” first year in office. A week after her kidney infection, Mary-Kate Olsen is back to partying around town. Tony Bennett is giving a “special performance” on behalf of Hillary Clinton in New Jersey in December. Jenna Jameson and Richie Rich are opening a bar together in Chinatown. Chelsea Clinton ate at Veritas with a “very handsome, dark, Indian male companion.” David Mamet is a fan of the New York Post.
Guv Love? The “tall and attractive” 25-year-old aide whom Jon Corzine may have been sitting next to at the time of his car crash was reassigned last month because she and the governor were allegedly getting too close. Larry and Laurie David may have split because Laurie had an affair with a married man on Martha’s Vineyard. Some Columbia Records staffers are worried that producer Rick Rubin has been named co-head of the label, given that he has no executive experience. Richie Sambora dumped Denise Richards during a Hawaii vacation a few months ago; she’d been expecting him to propose. Michael Jackson placed a number of odd, ill-timed room-service orders at an inn in Maryland, but he did bless the manager. Oliver Platt is an ardent supporter of the business tactics of George Steinbrenner, whom he plays in The Bronx Is Burning. Lindsay Lohan is dropping booze for bottled water.
Sing Along With Of Montreal
Actor and comedian Michael Showalter hosted the inaugural New York by New York event, Indie Rock Karaoke, Saturday night at Studio B. A sold-out crowd turned out to see Of Montreal, who played an original set before turning the mikes over to the amateurs. Surprise guests Paul Rudd and David Wain turned out a lively performance of Boston’s “More Than a Feeling,” and Showalter tried his hand at the brutally repetitive INXS hit “Need You Tonight.” Selections from the crowd included Cheap Trick’s “Surrender,” the Guns N’ Roses classic “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. Between numbers, Showalter’s Alan Shemper character emceed and told Soterios Johnson jokes. And everyone in attendance got a subscription to the magazine. More New York by New York events are coming. Until then, watch the video.
