Profile

Marcel Dzama has made a big move, breaking free of the lovely but numbing repetition of his little thumbnail drawings of mythical creatures. Here he goes all out. In the gallery’s first room, an excellent sixteen-part drawing shows the artist not just repeating drawings, but thinking about them. In the second room there are a series of dioramas set into the wall, like some kind of roadside Museum of the Strange. In the final space, he screens a sort of night of the artistic trip to the shores of doubt and death. On Saturday, when the show closes, a pianist will be playing in the dark, conjuring memories embedded in the group mind.
