Before the advent of movies and television, people did more than just conscript children into labor and slowly choke to death on coal dust. Victorian-era audiences watched “Magic Lantern” shows, an early instance of “motion picture” entertainment in which painted or printed glass slides were accompanied by live music and narration. Using original handcrafted slides, experimental media artist Ernie Gehr created this gorgeous five-channel video installation, a wide-screen a panorama from the past, as an update of the art. For even more recherché thrills, the exhibition includes a selection of Zoetrope strips and Phenakistiscope discs!
