Andrea Rosen is the tough, platinum princess of the Chelsea gallery scene. Perhaps best known for her devoted management of the estate of the late conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres who died at the age of 39 in 1996, Rosen exhibits contemporary talents in her 24rd street location. Turner Prize-winning German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans shows here and his striking color images, which come in every conceivable size, are pinned all over the walls of the gigantic, light-flooded white space: images of pop stars; of young friends dancing, getting naked in the woods, exposing themselves on airplanes; of half-eaten plates of fruit or sausages; of a tatty shirt left hanging to dry. As for contemporary painters, Rosen has her finger on the pulse. There's extraordinary young British painter Nigel Cooke, whose masterly, ravaged landscapes are often dotted with barely-visible human heads, and Dutchman Michael Raedecker, who adorns his scratchy landscape scenes with thread and sequins. Rosen is also responsible for discovering star painter John Currin, who was recently snatched up by the Gagosian Gallery. — Alex Mar
