Profile

Up three flights of rickety stairs and behind a modest wooden door is Kula Yoga, a popular studio specializing in Vinyasa-style practice. During classes that range from 65 minutes to two hours, experienced yogis guide students through sweeping sequences. The furious pace and minimal demonstration mean those with a deeper knowledge of yoga will get the most out of the experience, though there’s a basic option for beginners. With the homespun feel of a Woodstock collective, the two-studio space is decorated in a style that's half–Krishna-shrined-ashram, half–Marrakesh bazaar. The quirky style extends beyond looks: Each of the twenty-plus instructors is given wide latitude to create his or her own routine, so specifics differ by teacher and their whims—candlelit classes and live didgeridoo music are not out of the norm.

Pros

The classes here are both muscle-toning workouts and head-clearing stress-busters. The price isn’t bad either: Drop-in rates are set at a reasonable $18, with packages available.

Cons
The two studios, though decently sized, quickly get crowded. The most popular sessions can become especially cramped. Also, the studio lacks shower facilities.
