Do not be deceived by the serene blue lotus that is the logo of this conditioning studio. This is not restorative yoga instruction—these classes will kick your butt. Specific exercises vary from class to class to keep things interesting, but essentially you’ll be subjected to intense floor ab work, free-weight bicep curls, and long stretches of leg lifts. And then you’ll move to the barre to work glutes and thighs with the fury of the ballerinas from Black Swan. The workout borrows from yoga, Pilates, and ballet, and unlike other heterogenous fitness approaches like Physique 57, repetitions come in significant quantities, so the lactic acid in your muscles builds up like water against the Hoover Dam. Founder Rupa Mehta is tiny, gorgeous, and will come over to push you further if she catches you cheating. But she has a softer side as well, such as leading weekly volunteer trips to teach healthy living practices to underprivileged children in Brooklyn. Even though classes fill up (they max out at 30 people), clients get tons of personal attention with roving instructors adjusting, prodding, and encouraging almost as much as you’d get in a one-on-one session. You will leave wondering whether your current workout regimen has any effect at all.

Unless you are in exceptional shape already, you will likely see results with consistent sessions.

The location, nearly on the banks of the Hudson River, could be more convenient.
