Profile

While some spas are known for luxury (Rosewood, Setai) and others (Soho Sanctuary, Azure) get the Zen vibe right, Shibui Spa, located on the basement level of the Robert De Niro co-owned Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca, manages to present both with a taste level that exceeds most other spas in town. Open to hotel guests since 2009 and to the public starting in 2012, the experience here starts with the underground pool, located in a well-heated, denlike space to lounge in pre-treatment. Changing rooms are simple and elegant—Japanese linen robes feel much more modern than the oversize terry ones you get elsewhere, while old-school-looking steel lockers replace the more common formica ones. Treatments here skew Japanese; the Drunken Lotus massage, their signature service, utilizes sake-soaked towels to relieve sore muscles and essential oils to hydrate the skin, and like everything else here, is executed with grace.
