Lura Jones has tough-looking tattoo sleeves, but she’s known for her gentle touch with zippy, pain-minimizing Brazilians that are over before you feel too uncomfortable. Born and raised on the West Coast, she left her gig as a Morgan Stanley stockbroker to pursue a career in beauty, eventually closing her own waxing shop to join Paz Stark’s budding studio, and built a client list that includes Liv Tyler and Christina Ricci. The success of their joint operation led to a New York City outpost occupying one room of Sally Hershberger’s Face Place. It’s got a spare, whitewashed look that avoids feeling sterile and still maintains an industrial vibe vaguely recalling the neighborhood’s meatpacking past. The house depilatory is a French blue hard wax that lifts off the skin as it cools, adhering only to hair shafts and reducing the chance of irritation. Without strips or fabric, the stiffened putty is quickly removed, leaving behind fewer bumps and less redness than the regular stuff.
