Capitalizing on the success of his Ludlow Street barbershop and hair cuttery, Russell Manley—he of the impeccable handlebar mustache and the perfectly weathered suspenders—opened a spacious outlet in Williamsburg in the fall of 2011. Exposed beams, black and white Italian Carrera marble tiled floors, an old-fashioned barber’s pole, and massive apothecary shelving from the 1870’s were hand-picked by Manley to give the previously raw space its sepia-toned look. Though mean-looking tattoos abound in this bastion of hipsterdom, attitude does not— the vibe is welcoming and stylists are utterly friendly. They snip away happily and chat over a soundtrack of the latest indie tunes. Each one ranks at the senior level, but they do have their different specialties and talents, so be sure to ask for the person who best fits your needs (blunt cut, up-do, color, etc.). For dudes, five-step shaving regimens deliver skin-of-your-teeth close shears. Paying up at the ornate 1910 cash register salvaged from a Chicago Hotel isn’t wallet crushing, either—$95 for a women’s cut is pretty reasonable for the neighborhood.
