Performances of this groundbreaking, mesmeric Philip Glass opera is as rare as Einstein was nerdy: It’s been 31 years since the composer premiered it, and 15 since he last presented it live. Originally created with director Robert Wilson, it’s largely plotless and close to five hours long (there are nine scenes performed with the Philip Glass Ensemble, a chorus, violinist Timothy Fain, and spoken word by Lucinda Childs and Melvin Van Peebles). In other words: It’s Philip Glass, people!
