Profile

The New York Film Festival opened last Friday with Alain Resnais's Wild Grass, but there are plenty of movies left to see in the refurbished Alice Tully Hall—even in what insiders are calling an off year. You can get an early look at movies like the Oprah Winfrey-produced Precious or the new Almodóvar with Penélope Cruz, but I'd seek out films that might not be so widely distributed, like Samuel Maoz's tactile yet metaphorical Lebanon, set inside an Israeli tank (pictured; October 1); and a new thriller from Bong Joon-Ho called Mother (October 9).
