The immediate area around Eventi's north Chelsea high-rise is hit-or-miss, but its central location has helped make Kimpton's fourth New York hotel a favorite with both business travelers and families. Because it’s one of the closest four-star properties to Madison Square Garden, on any given day you might spy a pack of backup dancers checking out en masse, or NBA draft picks working out in the gym (to help the latter feel comfortable, the hotel offers a limited number of "tall rooms," with longer beds and higher furniture.) But all the 292 of the spacious dark-hued accommodations boast sophisticated interiors by Colum McCartan, custom Frette linens, and posh Etro bath amenities. Some of the 53 suites boast a jet-equipped soaking tub, while the top-tier suites—located on the fifth floor near the general-use terrace garden—enjoy apartment-like layouts. (Also on the fifth floor: a fitness center, screening room, and spa.) Signature Kimpton touches abound, like a complimentary nightly wine hour and in-room yoga accessories. And China Grill Management (which also oversees spots like Asia de Cuba and Tanuki Tavern) operates the indoor-outdoor FoodParc market-style eatery, partly set in the plaza adjacent to the hotel.

Comfortable, design-conscious rooms; lots of complimentary amenities and services; and window-filled meeting and party spaces. Plus: the outdoor urban plaza features a 20-foot-wide multi-media screen which the hotel plans to use for "movie in the park" nights and other special events.

Roving crowds from Herald Square and Madison Square Garden can be tough to navigate.
