The lowdown

After a wall collapsed in 2007, it took nearly a decade for the West Village’s legendary Chumley’s to reopen thanks to a series of hurdles including construction delays and hostile neighbors. Once frequented by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck, and, later on, fratty types, the former speakeasy has become a reservations-only cocktail bar. The man behind the restoration is Sushi Nakazawa’s Alessandro Borgognone, who kept the famous door. Expect a 1920s vibe, a burger with bone marrow and other upscale dishes, and fancy cocktails.
