The greatest thing about the U.S. Open is U.S. Open fever—for two weeks once a year, the tournament, the last Grand Slam of the season, turns half the city into sputtering tennis fanatics: scrambling for center-court tickets; expounding on the beauty and grace of the well-laid drop shot; developing inappropriately public crushes on Roger Federer. The swarming crowds and notoriously expensive concession stands at Flushing Meadows—the home of the USTA National Tennis Center’s seventeen outdoor courts, including the 22,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium—are merely a trifling nuisance when the goal is checking out a cavalcade of international stars. New in 2013 is the expanded American Express Fan Experience, an impressive center near the East Gate hosting everything from meet-and-greets with players, swing analysis with experts, and free clinics for children and adults on an enclosed full-sized court.
