Like the name says, the focus at this no-nonsense family-run business, in operation since 1910, is surf and turf. Four separate counters showcase a sparkling display of pristine fish (orange arctic char, thick white halibut), shellfish and crustaceans (tiny cockles, live lobster, fresh and pre-cooked shrimp), and an equally appealing selection of meats, including Bell and Evans poultry and dry-aged prime beef, veal, and lamb, all of which is cut to order. Delivery is free, and you can special order suckling pig, calves tongue, and fresh ham. This isn’t the best place to buy your condiments, broths, barbecue sauces, or other pantry items, though; those on display possess the dusty evidence of products placed on the shelf ages ago. Best to stick with the main attraction: fresh fish and meat, sold in such consistent volume that the cuts are practically still mooing (or swimming or baa-ing). — Nancy Davidson
