Albertine boutique owner Kyung Lee offers bespoke dresses at off-the-rack prices in this crafty sister shop. She opened the workshop three doors down from her original store in March 2009, producing simple canvas halter dresses and tunics patterned after her favorite vintage sundresses. The space resembles a hip sewing room, with dresses hanging on rolling racks and stashed in a lofted storage area above and funky jackets, belts, and gloves tacked to the walls. Shoppers try on sample sizes at Albertine, choose a swatch, schedule a fitting, and retrieve a made-to-fit dress two to three weeks later. Lee and her team of seamstresses have been commissioned to create special-occasion garb for proms and bridal parties, and they limit the number of dresses they create in each print so the styles don’t become oversaturated. Custom dresses range from $275 for ready-made patterns to more than $1,000 for complicated special designs.
