Former bike messenger Stewart Crumpler created the first Crumpler bag back in 1999 as a means to transport pizza and beer home on his bike. After hatching a business plan with two other couriers, Crumpler’s Australia-based company has gone on to open stores around the world and earned a cult following among New York cyclists, photographers, students, and commuters. These two, one-room shops display their durable, water-resistant wares on long, store-spanning shelves and simple wall hooks, organized by shape and size. Top-sellers include the “Salary Sacrifice” nylon backpack, which comes with an insulated, padded pouch for your laptop, the roomy “Considerable Embarrassment” messenger bag, and “The Famous Wine Bar” bag with compartments for bottles. The West Village location also houses sewing machines and neon rolls of fabric, where visitors can have drawings or logos appliquéd on a bag in less than two weeks. Every Crumpler comes with a 99 year warranty, and bags with zipper malfunctions or busted straps are sent to their Brooklyn warehouse and fixed for free.
Beer for BagsCrumpler hosts a “Beer for Bags” event every June. Bring a specified brand and amount of beer to the West Village Crumpler and swap it for a free bag. Details at http://www.crumplerbags.com/b4b/
