Savvy shoppers wander beyond the pricey boutiques of Williamsburg to this outpost on Franklin Street for its carefully edited selection of men’s and women’s designs at surprisingly palatable prices. Before Michelle Mangiliman opened Dalaga NYC with her now-husband, Bob Lindeman, in 2006, this black-and-white brick building had housed Earwax Records and the Bellwether Gallery. These days, the store has an Anthropologie-like vibe with refurbished shabby-chic upholstered Victorian furniture—much of it scavenged from the streets of Greenpoint—plus hardwood floors, silk flowers, a chandelier, and a painted tin ceiling. The store’s unofficial mascot, a little beagle named Lolo Motto (“Grandpa Motto” in Filipino) sometimes sleeps in the window display area near vintage-inspired shoes by Rocket Dog and Seychelles and colorful cocktail and casual dresses by Glam, BB Dakota, Ariella, and Mangiliman herself. There’s a hearty mix of items by local designers, like jewelry from By Boe, leather bags from Valhalla, and men’s ties by Sovereign Beck, as well as hosiery, denim, and shirts from more mainstream brands like Hudson Jeans, Tulle, and Spanx.
