Profile
Fresh on the heels of various other European labels setting up outlet shops in Brooklyn (APC and Paul Smith, for example), British sportswear specialist Fred Perry opened Fred Perry Surplus in Williamsburg in May of 2011. The shop carries the same genre and style of merchandise as Fred Perry’s other locations but with one important distinction—all items are from past seasons and straight from the company’s Jersey warehouse. There are the signature polos, tennis shoes, smart fedoras, leather bags and wallets, but with a greater selection of women’s wear and a 30 percent discount on the goods. The décor is a departure from the traditional Fred Perry modern, minimalist shops. Fitting with the neighborhood, the interior has a rustic, industrial feel, and there are painted brick walls and bare hardwood floors. The formula attracts a wide variety of Brooklynites—Bay Ridge natives, indie neighborhood kids and Park Slope mothers with strollers can all be found perusing the goods.
