Originally launched in 1994 as an Asian pop-culture magazine by Martin Wong and Eric Nakamura, Giant Robot has since evolved into a full-fledged style movement, spawning an LA restaurant, two West Coast retail stores, and, in 2005, its first New York location. Dedicated to the newest and coolest toys, gadgets, and clothes (Bruce Lee T-shirts abound) from Asia, Giant Robot is part gallery, part toy store, and part homage to what’s big in Japan; the latter often means entertainment/technology hybrids like the cutting-edge Mimobot, a hilarious action figure-cum-flash drive, or the demonic, wind-up toy character called Knockman. For Luddites—and art lovers—there’s plenty of printed matter here, including an excellent selection of Asian art books and stationary from stars like Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara, as well as works on paper from up-and-coming West Coast artists.
