Profile
The Texas-based retailer known for its affordable apparel, jewelry, beauty products, footwear, and home furnishings makes its first foray into Manhattan with this two-level store in the Manhattan Mall. While the no-frills décor, vast array of merchandise, and low prices are on par with the megabrand’s dozens of other outposts across the country, this location boasts twice the average number of cash registers and fitting rooms, as well as the largest staff. To further accommodate efficiency-loving Manhattanites, the chain has adapted some hi-tech novelties, like an electronic system that directs customers to cash registers and estimates waiting times; touch-screen machines that enable product searches and click-to-buy, even if the item is out of stock in Manhattan; and buzzers that alert staff if the bathrooms haven’t been cleaned in over an hour. Though it lacks high-end labels, JCPenney’s own brands and designer collaborations like American Living (an offshoot of Ralph Lauren) span home furnishings, kids apparel, and womenswear; looks tend to be on par with T.J. Maxx or Kohl’s. With ongoing sales and perennial deals like $4 towels and pillows, the store draws students looking to furnish their dorm rooms and bargain-hunters searching for basics.
