Profile

The meatpacking district may resemble Disneyworld for drinkers, but Lars Bolander’s eponymous highbrow interiors shop on Gansevoort Street is a decidedly uncartoonish destination. This 3,200-square-foot space is the kind of place where heavy hitters come, decorator in tow, to hunt down creamy white, twentieth-century French settees, Gustavian end tables, or Venetian consoles dating back to the days of Descartes. Ironically, the store doesn't feel quite as stuffy as the items’ provenance might suggest; it's this history-heavy but light-in-feeling aesthetic that accounts for why Bolander has become a go-to guy for every shelter mag on the newsstand. Those with shallower pockets might take ideas from the Swedish design prodigy's selection of clocks and accessories. True converts won't want to miss the two other meticulously appointed outposts, one in Palm Beach, and a second in Miami's design district.
