Profile
A musical mainstay since 1998, Music Matters offers gear for both musicians and fans. The walls are papered in vintage rock posters, and a soundtrack of rock and pop blares overhead. Owner Jason Figel mans the register, stocking his tiny store with a surprisingly well-rounded selection of used and new CDs. Indie rock sells best among Park Slope locals, he says, but the diverse assortment also features metal, folk, country, classical, jazz, and pop. A dedicated music lover himself, Figel will special-order obscure albums if you can’t find a title in-store. Those who rock it old school can find used cassette tapes or (older still) used and new LPs. DVDS of movies (from West Side Story to Wedding Crashers) and concerts perch on a shelf nearby. The racks behind the register are dedicated to musicians’ tools for any type of jam, including guitar strings, reeds, tuners, and metronomes, as well as blank CDs and recording supplies for aspiring rock stars.
