Profile

“NYC” and “NIKE” flash in neon in the windows of this Flatiron store, seeming to taunt the New Balance flagship across the street. Nike Running Flatiron lives and breathes running, and offers interactive Pro Services, which include free Nike+ group runs (test out shoes or watches), bra fittings, and Run Analysis. The Run Analysis treadmill seems to float on a cement cinderblock in the center of the main level. Here, an employee films running feet using an iPad. This is the store’s core service, and relies heavily on the in-house Nike+ Run Analysis app, launched in May 2014, which maps gait as well as the angle of foot pronation. The staff is a fair mix of beginner to elite runners, many of whom are members of local running clubs like Black Roses and Iron Runners. Their jargon, lifestyle, and in-depth knowledge elevate the customer experience. Throughout the store, recycled wood tables and fat wooden planks harmonize with distressed -brick walls, NYC map wallpaper marked with running routes, white subway tiles, neon accents, and gigantic chevron racing stripes. An accent wall in black, waffled rubber backs the shoe displays, arranged by purpose and degree of stability (catering to heel-strikers, mid-foot runners, and forefoot runners, in turn). And in the stairwell, a digital wall rotates real-time Instagram photos featuring Nike+ Run Club happenings around the world and Nike-promoted hashtags like #NikeNYC. This is the deepest selection of Nike running gear you’ll find in the city, including the Nike+ Fuelband (from $99), thermal tights (from $75), and shorts in every length and color (from $45).
