Profile
The Boerum Hill–based nut emporium opened this second shop in November 2009, bringing dozens of varieties of dried fruit, seeds, granola, candies, trail mixes, and—of course—nuts to the Chelsea Market. Because the mini-chain is also a wholesaler, the prices trump those of most gourmet groceries, and, unlike the Smith Street store, this location offers self-serve bags of grains in front and a popular make-your-own-trail-mix bar for custom combinations ($6.99 per pound). Apart from standard raw, roasted, and salted types, the Box also delivers more offbeat spiced, sugared, and chocolate-covered flavors. For the indecisive, over twenty prepackaged trail mixes incorporate everything from wasabi peas to dried figs. Other non-nut favorites include no-sugar-added mango slices and a variety of crispy, dried veggie chips. Bins near the register are filled with more than 100 different spices, a welcome accompaniment for seasoning groceries from the surrounding market.
