Profile
Jazzy Brazilian music sets a relaxed tone as customers walk into the Osklen flagship in SoHo. With a surfboard against the wall and Rio de Janeiro coffee table books on display, the store itself creates the feeling of a Brazilian vacation. Oskar Metsavaht created the Osklen line in 1989, focusing on designing fashions evocative of his native country—and doing so in a sustainable way. The recycled wood shelves hold dresses of natural latex, organic silk, and vintage parachute material, sometimes embellished with reflective bits of carbon fiber. For the guys there are baggy “nirvana” pants, surf shorts, and pullovers made of braided straw. Other uniquely Osklen items include roomy bags made of salmon and tilapia fish skin, as well as Osklen’s signatures shoes (many in the aforementioned fish skin) featuring a reinforced sole that tones calf muscles.
