Sonja Rubin and Kip Chapelle began designing clothing together in Italy and Austria in 1997. Thanks to the popularity of their sleek silhouettes among the celebrity set—Sharon Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gwyneth Paltrow are all clients—they opened this boutique in the meatpacking district just five years later. Designed by art-world darling Annabelle Selldorf (who also did New York’s Neue Galerie), the cavernous space, with its concrete floor, exposed-brick wall, and unsheathed light bulbs, complements the architecturally inspired clothing. Gauzy tops and gathered-silk sheaths drape the racks, but the real draw is the store’s wistfully named denim line, “192 Doves” (signifying peace among the world’s 192 countries). Jude Law, Keira Knightley, and Sienna Miller have all strutted around in these jeans, which feature waist loops, hand-stitching, and curved waistbands on the women's styles. If you’re willing to wait four weeks and spend four figures on the hallowed denim pants, you might also be interested in a pair of Rubin Chapelle’s custom-made boots.
