Profile
The sleek glass-and-steel entrance of the Skyscraper Museum doubles as an architectural bookshop that carries analytical and image-filled tabletop tomes. Fittingly, New York is the dominant theme, from the more general (Manhattan Skyscrapers, New York in Aerial Views), to the specific (Robert Moses and the Modern State, The Chrysler Building, The Lower Manhattan Plan). A small section is devoted to sustainable architecture, while children’s titles like This Is New York round out the collection. For photographic prints, the friendly staff refers visitors to two virtual archives on its website that together contain more than 1,000 images of the construction of the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, and various other landmark Manhattan buildings; the museum can print, matte, and frame any of these upon request. There’s the usual selection of branded souvenirs—logo-stamped T-shirts, baseball caps, and mugs—but here, you’re better off choosing from the surprisingly tasteful magnets, coasters, and cards depicting beautiful city architecture.
