Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, a sprawling mall of over 220 stores, is about an hour’s journey north from Manhattan to Central Valley. As a “premium” outlet, Woodbury’s huge roster includes designer retailers rarely seen at discount malls. Stores like Dior, Tory Burch, Cavalli, and Jimmy Choo reflect the up-market shoppers traveling in from the boroughs (and explain the tourists, who come by the busload). Off-the-rack department stores like Neiman Marcus Last Call and Sak’s Off Fifth offer twenty-five to sixty-five percent off their Fifth Avenue prices. Exclusive home stores make buying an impressive wedding or shower gift cheap(er) and easy—you can’t go wrong with top-of-the-line linens from Frette, or coveted cookware by Le Creuset. While it might be frightening to expose children to such an intense retail environment, Woodbury could be the exception: There are dozens of children’s clothing and toy stores in addition to a small playground near the food court.
