On the Cover: One of Many (2022), mixed-media collage on paper, 22-by-15 inches. Artwork by Deborah Roberts for New York Magazine. Courtesy of Deborah Roberts, Stephen Friedman Gallery London and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles. Photograph of artwork: Paul Bardagjy. Roberts, whose work grapples with notions of race, beauty, and otherness, used now-famous photographs of Trayvon Martin to create a cover to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death. “I wanted to do something that hadn’t already been done for him,” she says. His image has “been used for him and against him. I kind of wanted to take that away.”
