Matchmaker Amy Van Doran makes it a point to work with clients she calls “outliers.” In other words, post-20-something women—and sometimes men—who could get lost in the mêlée of OkCupid and Tinder. She takes on 18 clients at a time who pay $15,000 for six months of dates selected from a curated Rolodex of about 5,000 people. Currently, she’s looking for a match for a woman we’ll call Laura—in her 30s, beautiful, the creative director of a successful start-up. “This is the problem of being so amazing,” says Van Doran. “It’s hard to find good people.” She starts to narrow down the dossiers. “This guy tends to go for younger women … This guy is just too much of an opposite to attract.” In ten minutes, she’s landed on a man we’ll call Ben: worldly, well employed, wants kids, and likes women who are smarter than he is. Van Doran seems pleased with herself: “I might have just made a power couple.”
