Mom's Day Out

Mother's Day events to show her how much you care.

1. Some moms would love nothing more than a night out on Broadway. And there’s quite a few offerings to satisfy them, like Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi in the romantic She Loves Me, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Bedlam’s innovative and fun rendition of Sense and Sensibility, in the basement of Judson Church.

2. Or if she’s into campy, bloody fun (with lots of shirtless boys), you could take her to the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho on Broadway.

3. Either way, treat her to small plates and a drink before or after the play, at the nearby Bar Downstairs at the Andaz on Fifth Avenue, which just switched over to its spring menu. Follow the secret door to libations like the Arandas Redemption (tequila, St. Germain, watermelon syrup, lime, cucumber, jalapeño, $17) or the Portuguese Prizefighter (cachaça, white rum, coconut-basil-and-Thai-chile cream, lime, $17).

4. The Alvin Ailey Dance Company performs at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The program includes new works as well as classics like Revelations.

5. While Joan Osborne continues her annual Mother’s Day benefit performance at City Winery.

6. How spooky is Mom? At the House of Yes in Bushwick, the Poetry Brothel presents a bordello-esque séance, a night of communicating with the occult, complete with aerialists and a jazz band.

7. At Carolines on Broadway, the funny ladies come out with a lineup including Yamaneika Saunders, Aparna Nancherla, and Angela LaGreca for the Hersterical Mothers Day.

8. While at 54 Below, moms and their talented kids pair up for A Very Broadway Mother’s Day.

9. Is Mom into immersive theater? Whisk her away on a tropical vacation without leaving the city at Third Rail’s The Grand Paradise—from the folks behind Then She Fell. It closes May 29, so it’s one of the last chances to do so.

10. Or take her on a daytime classical-music date when the New England Symphonic Ensemble performs at Carnegie Hall.

11. We hear that moms like spa days. At Haven spa in Soho they’re offering a “Mommy and Me Package” for Mother’s Day, which includes a European manicure, European pedicure, Swedish massage, and the "Escape Facial." Help Mom look and feel her best!

12. Also relaxing? Fresh air. Take mom to the gardens of Wave Hill in the Bronx, where they’ll be offering garden walks (free with admission) and picnic lunches.

13. Or go to the New York Botanical Garden for the Mother’s Day Weekend Garden Party for live music, poetry, craft activities, and games like badminton. Happy Mother’s Day!
