Weekend Agenda

Events to check out this weekend, 8/17–8/20.

Catch Mary J. Blige by the beach.

1. This Thursday, be soothed by the Beach Boys led by Mike Love, but sans Brian Wilson. Either way, the set list features songs off the understated LP Wild Honey, which came out almost 50 years ago.

2. Thursday night is also the night that the dreamy noise rockers DIIV go unplugged at the Murmrr Theater, near Grand Army Plaza. This will be the band’s first acoustic show.

3. Friday evening, R&B legend Mary J. Blige keeps it soulful by the beach when she plays at the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island in support of this year's Strength of a Woman.

4. And Thursday through Saturday, actress and singer Cristin Milioti of the Tony-winning musical Once performs at Joe’s Pub.

5. Saturday concludes the weeklong Battery Dance Festival with free outdoor performances from some of the world’s top dancers and choreographers, plus workshops to pick up some skills of your own.

6. And up in Harlem's St. Nicholas Park, the 2017 ImageNation Outdoors Film & Music Festival continues on Saturday with a free screening of Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro, which envisions a book that James Baldwin never finished. A DJ kicks things off at 6 p.m.

7. This weekend marks the opening of Smorg Square, the new weekly outdoor food market on Canal Street with 20-plus vendors and a full bar. It also includes an adjacent indoor Brooklyn Flea.

8. And this Saturday is the last Summer Streets of the season, during which Park Avenue and connected streets will be closed to vehicles between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue, and opened for people to play, run, walk, and bike. Events include free workout classes, performances, bike-riding lessons, a zipline, urban agricultural workshops, and much more.

9. These days have all of us feeling a little unhinged. On Saturday, watch comedians let it all out at Slightly Feral, a storytelling show with Catie Lazarus, Aasif Mandvi, Leslie Goshko, and Andrew Bancroft.

10. And on Saturday at Marcus Garvey Park is a free performance by Dipset member Jim Jones, who was recently signed to Roc Nation.

11. Things will be sweet at Honey Weekend at Wave Hill. Get buzzed with candle-making and honey-extraction demonstrations, meet local beekeepers, and taste artisanal honeys. You can even adopt a bee! Better start thinking of names now.

12. And gamers should head to Terminal 5 on Saturday and Sunday for PLAY NYC, a dedicated games convention with three floors and a rooftop of everything from mobile to arcade to VR, tabletop, and live games, plus speakers. Happy gaming, and happy weekend!
