Jazz Den

The Astor Room
34-12 36th St., nr. 35th Ave., Astoria; 718-255-1947
The newest destination bar in Queens was actually built in the twenties and operated as the commissary for the silent-screen stars working in the attached Paramount studios. Today the Astor Room caters to any Jazz Age enthusiast, and still pays tribute to that era in its décor—original marble staircase, antique chandeliers, and a baby-grand piano for Friday-night and Sunday-brunch concerts—and its classics-only drink menu, developed by Lynnette Marrero and Jim Kearns (Freemans, Rye House). Amble over any day from 5 to 7 p.m. for cheap bar snacks, cheese, and house-cured charcuterie.
