Ellen B. Holtzman

A Leader in Matrimonial and Family Law

Known and respected statewide as a leader in child custody law, Ellen Holtzman has a record of results in complex custody cases. She has prevailed in a number of cases that set legal precedents in New York, and is a sought-after speaker and thought leader on the many thorny issues involved in child custody cases. Ellen’s recent talks have included a symposium for psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers, and members of the judiciary at NYU on the present status of the concept of “the best interest of the child,” and an appearance before the American Psychoanalytic Association’s “Psychoanalysis and the Law” Group. A past president of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, Ellen now heads up its Foundation. She is a recipient of the Joan E. Ellenbogen Founder’s Award for contributions to the advancement of law and the legal profession, and a Commissioner on the New York State Legislative Ethics Commission. While leading a team of top professionals in her private practice, Ellen also makes time to direct legal training for the innovative Family Law and Forensics Program at the Washington Square Institute, lecture on legal ethics, and mentor lawyers who represent battered women in divorce cases.
