In brief: ‘Goya in Bordeaux’

Carlos saura’s Goya in Bordeaux is photographed by Vittorio Storaro with a florid palette that might have given even Goya hives, but at the center of it all is the venerable Spanish actor Francisco Rabal, with his jagged, knobby, bullish countenance. Rabal’s Goya is such a great camera subject that one regrets the camera doesn’t do him justice; Saura fancifies everything, and yet Rabal triumphs. Goya himself would have clamored to capture his gouty, lusting presence.
