Card Trick

Posted June 29, 2006
I never, ever remember to pack all the cables I need. So last time I traveled with my digital camera and my laptop, I had no way of moving pictures from my camera’s memory card to my laptop’s hard drive. I didn’t want to waste money on another transfer cable given that I had one back at home, and I didn’t want to buy a traditional, bulky memory-card reader. Ultimately, the tiny Digital Concepts SD Card Reader saved the day. It basically turns any SD card into a thumb drive that plugs right into any Mac or PC’s USB port. (There’s also a version that accepts Memory Sticks instead of SD cards.) It weighs practically nothing, and it’s incredibly cheap (in fact, it’s only $5 if you take advantage of a rebate offer than runs through July 1st), so now I just always keep it packed in a side pocket of my laptop case—and leave my transfer cable at home on purpose.

$10 at Radio Shack, multiple locations, radioshack.com.
