Good Timing

I love tech stuff that talks—if it has something useful to say. The Nacho Libre Talking Doll? No. The Williams-Sonoma Talking Alert Thermometer? Definitely. This baby is basically a fancy timer with a probe that monitors cooking temperatures for meat and poultry. It will alert you and adjust the time if your food is cooking faster or slower than anticipated. You have your choice of old-school beeps or a quasi-robotic female voice that issues time-remaining notices like “15 minutes.” You can set reminder intervals from 1 to 30 minutes so you can keep checking your Thanksgiving bird to make your own judgment call, in case you want to override Ms. Roboto. Best of all, she’ll never say, “Yes, it is true—I am Nacho.” Even if she wants to.
