Lots of dry cleaners claim greenness, but what does that mean? A new website by the National Cleaners Association directs consumers to cleaners that pay attention to the toxicity of their chemicals and where they’re disposed of (because, as technical director Alan Spielvogel says, “there is practically no such thing as chemical-free dry cleaning”). The site ranks cleaners (from one to five leaves) based on everything from the service’s nontoxic cleaning capabilities to energy efficiency to the kinds of plastic used in garment covers.
