This project does not imply that NAACP_LDF endorses the Strategist or eBay.

This month, eBay, in partnership with the Strategist, went back to some of our favorite celebrity shoppers — including Cheryl “Salt” James of Salt-N-Pepa — to ask them about things that they can live without and would be willing to sell at auction for charity. All proceeds will go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (eBay is receiving and donating all proceeds and matching every dollar the auction earns). In 1995, Salt-N-Pepa’s song “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a She Thing,” which I wrote, was released. The song is about female empowerment, and, to us, that is a lifestyle and something we are very passionate and serious about celebrating in our music. We only worked with women on the “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a She Thing” video — the dancers, crew members, choreographer, director, and stylist were all female. When we found out we’d be performing the song on Late Night With David Letterman, I wanted to channel the sentiment of being queens and powerful women through what I, Pepa, and our then-DJ Spinderella wore. Our stylist picked up some Levi’s jean jackets, and we had a patch designed that features the song’s title surrounded by flowers. I don’t remember who designed the patch, but I fell in love — it was so feminine and beautifully represented our song.

When we began to perform the song, as the music dropped, we had our backs turned to the audience and did a little bop back and forth, so that they could see the patches on our backs. I just felt so strong and confident singing while wearing that jacket. I never wore it again, but I cherished the jacket for years. The patch represents something that is so authentic to who we were — and still are — as musicians. I hope that whoever becomes the jacket’s new owner knows how much I love it and what it stands for.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments, rolling luggage, pillows for side sleepers, natural anxiety remedies, and bath towels. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
