This project does not imply that NAACP_LDF endorses the Strategist or eBay.
This month, eBay, in partnership with the Strategist, went back to some of our favorite celebrity shoppers — including Nicky Hilton — to ask them about things that they can live without and would be willing to sell at auction for charity. All proceeds will go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (eBay is receiving and donating all proceeds and matching every dollar the auction earns). The moment I first saw this Proenza Schouler in a magazine, I loved it, but I had no reason to buy it. Then I was invited to the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in Los Angeles with Paris. I didn’t have anything to wear, so I ran over to Barneys on Wilshire Boulevard the morning of the event with the dress in the back of my mind. I found it, bought it, wore it, and a couple of weeks later, saw myself in Us Weekly’s “Who Wore It Best?” next to a photo of Jennifer Lawrence in the same dress.
While I didn’t wear the dress to any other events, I kept it in my closet all these years thinking it would be something I could give to my daughters. Even back when I bought it, before I had girls of my own, I thought to myself, I have to save it for when I have daughters one day, just like my mom saved her dresses for me and Paris. But when the opportunity to donate it arose, I decided I’d rather give it to charity. The dress isn’t ubiquitous — its style is a reflection of a moment in time, and it has the Proenza Schouler bustier, which is something the designers no longer do. It’s a great party dress, and I hope whoever wins it has an incredible night out on the town in it like I did.
The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments, rolling luggage, pillows for side sleepers, natural anxiety remedies, and bath towels. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
