The Last of Piera Bochner’s Candles

Big news in the candle world: Piera Bochner is getting out of the candle-making biz to join the the furniture design MFA program at RISD. Bochner’s candles were an early Café Forgot (and Strategist) favorite and, according to the artist, are made by individually pouring different colored waxes into silicone mold forms she made from produce bought in Chinatown and Union Square. In her Instagram post announcing the news, she said she’d be putting up the last of her personal stock for sale on her Instagram Stories. While the last flash sale is scheduled for today at noon, don’t fret: Her work is still in stock on SSENSE in a variety of shapes, including a spiky kiwano, a shapely blue heirloom tomato, and the bitter melon candle that I’ve kept on my desk for the last three years. Since this is the final opportunity to get your hands on her candles (possibly ever but definitely for at least the length of her MFA), we suggest getting them while the getting is good.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments, rolling luggage, pillows for side sleepers, natural anxiety remedies, and bath towels. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
