When I wrote about my hiking and backpacking essentials last summer, one of the first things I put on my list was a dry bag — a waterproof, airtight sack that keeps your belongings from getting wet. It’s one of my go-to items on my packing list because it’s lightweight and helps keep my stuff organized and, most important, dry. (Even when my entire pack gets wet, my stuff inside stays protected.) And right now, the bag I use from Sea to Summit is 25 percent off.

When I’m backpacking, I keep all of my extra layers in a dry bag, because soaked clothing can quickly spell danger when you’re exposed in the wilderness: A drenched shirt can lower your body temperature and even cause hypothermia if you’re wet for too long (especially in colder weather). I also use dry bags for food (the roll-top clip closure makes it easy to hang it from a tree with a shoestring or rope as a bear bag), electronics, and printed materials like trail maps and books. Even if there aren’t torrential downpours in the forecast, having my things in a dry bag gives me extra peace of mind. Just in case a sudden shower gets me and my pack wet, at least I know I’ll have a pair of dry socks and a base layer to change into.
