What Singer Grace VanderWaal Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked singer Grace VanderWaal — the star of Disney’s Stargirl, which premieres on Disney+ today — about the candles, slippers, and packaged ramen she can’t live without.

When I was younger, I went to Japan and I ate real ramen for the first time. I fell in love with it. Here, we just mostly have the dried-up chicken-flavored cubes. But this spicy ramyun that you can buy on Amazon is so incredible — it tastes like the real stuff. I feel really good making it, because it feels like I’m cooking. You boil water, put in the noodles — it’s a beautiful process. It never fails to impress guests. Add an egg, especially if you have a special someone over. Add an egg, hide the package, boom.

I am constantly having to trim my hair and my bangs at home. I never go in for haircuts. Haircuts are the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of in my life. When people tell me they go into a hair salon to get their bangs trimmed, I can’t. I don’t even know how to cut hair, I just use normal scissors.

I love these candles. I have a huge collection in my room, and I genuinely always keep them lit. I need a peaceful room that’s just for me that I can be alone in, and candles are important to me for that. You’re finally home, you’re packing, you’re lighting candles. I’m constantly rebuying them, because I go through them so fast.

I have very dry skin and super-dry lips all the time, no matter the season. I’m constantly putting on lip balm. I honestly got this for free, and it hasn’t run out for what seems like a year now, so I’m always using it. I actually really like it. I like the plain — I used to have the cherry, but I recommend the original. I don’t recommend the cherry; the formula starts separating into a syrupy oil color, and it comes out really weird.

I eat this cereal for dessert, and sometimes for dinner. But I can’t eat it in the morning. I just can’t. It’s a delicacy. And you can’t eat it dry. It says it’s real chocolate, but it’s not. There’s powder on the inside and the milk activates it.

My house is kind of old, and I’ve gotten freaking splinters on the bottom of my feet so many times because of our wood floors. So I wear house slippers. Also, my dad keeps my house cold all the time, so my feet are always numb. These are a necessity. Cheap, slip-on, closed-toe slippers are the best. You’re a psychopath if you wear open-toe slippers.

I actually hate reading; I’ve never been a reader. But I love this book. I read it for the first time when I was 12 doing America’s Got Talent, when there was no chance I was going to be in the movie. Now I’m 16 years old, and the only books I’ve finished are Twilight and this. But it’s a crazy honor to be in this movie, and it was such a good experience.
